English Learners (EL)

Gaining English language proficiency to succeed academically and realize goals

The goal of English Learner (EL) instruction is to support multilingual learners receiving EL Program services in achieving the English language proficiency needed to succeed academically and to realize personal, social, and career goals. EL teachers work in collaboration with both general education and specialist teachers to design a comprehensive instructional program for each student. Teachers also review data throughout the school year to determine how a student progresses through the EL program.

Students who are eligible for services are assigned an EL programming level (1-5 for kindergarten through grade 12 and 1-4 for prekindergarten) based on a language assessment. EL teachers provide supplemental English language development instruction for all students at levels 1-5 and collaborate with grade-level  or content area teachers to provide access to content and support English language development.

The State of Minnesota has adopted the WIDA English Language Development Standards. These standards represent the social and academic language students will need to understand and use to succeed in school
