Supporting our scholars, families and community during these extremely difficult times

Supporting our scholars, families and community during these extremely difficult times

Osseo Area Schools families and community members,

Over the weekend, we were deeply saddened to see the horrific events that led to Tyre Nichols’ killing in Memphis, Tenn. Unfortunately, once again, a black man was treated inhumanely by those we’ve instilled trust in. Our hearts go out to those grieving as well as the thousands of hurting communities throughout the country, including ours. This has retraumatized many of our staff, scholars and community members, especially our staff and scholars of color and law enforcement families.

As you and your family process this news in the days and weeks ahead, know that our school staff are here to support you. School counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, and mental health partners are among the many caring adults who will listen deeply to scholars and help them feel safe. United Way 211, a free 24/7 counseling service, can also be reached at 651-291-0211. Please review these Minnesota Department of Education resources for additional guidance:

We’re committed to upholding and protecting the humanity of each and every scholar, family, staff member, and community member. Our district’s core values state that everyone has equal intrinsic value, and individuals are treated respectfully and equitably. This has been an integral part of our work for many years, and is now included in our strategic plan. As the second year of the plan’s implementation approaches, know that our district is taking the needed steps to continuously improve. We’re working tirelessly to build safe, welcoming and inclusive environments that reduce system disparities, barriers and inequities.

It takes all of us to come together to support each other. Thank you for your understanding and care for others during these difficult times.

Respectfully,
Cory McIntyre
Superintendent
