Osseo Area Schools superintendent Dr. Kim Hiel and school board vice chair Tanya Prince spoke during the workshop portion of the Jan. 12 Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA) 2024 Leadership Conference.
During their presentation, Dr. Hiel and Vice Chair Prince walked through the district's mission statement and strategic plan, and how it is implemented daily. They also discussed the district’s core values and vision statement, which were launched by the school board. Vice Chair Prince shared why each core value was chosen and why each one is important for the success of students and staff at every level.
“Our mission statement is not just words. It is something that we mean and something that we stand for. We want to make sure words are not just words, words are action,” Dr. Hiel shared.
They also discussed how the board has come together, finding common ground to work for the success of the district. Vice Chair Prince laid out the district advisory committees that each board member serves on and the use of board meeting public comments.
Dr. Hiel and Vice Chair Prince also shared the school board’s recent successes that they have come together on, including creating the strategic plan, passing both Phase I and II of the Building a Better Future referendum and the superintendent search process to hire Dr. Hiel.
The presentation ended with questions from the audience, including questions on professional development to bring a school board together, how to work with a superintendent and district leaders and how a school district can measure their progress and success.
