A group called The Minnesota Percussion Trio came to Park Center Senior High’s auditorium on Jan. 5 to perform for all students who participate in music programs at Brooklyn Middle STEAM School (BMS.)
The school’s music teachers wrote a grant to the District 279 Foundation to have the performers in to teach music students about musical traditions found around the world. The trio performed their Around the World in 80 Beats program, which included opportunities for audience participation and featured instruments and music from Minnesota and the United States to further flung locales like Guatemala, Brazil, Spain, the Middle East, Ghana and Australia.
“Our student population represents all of these different parts of the world, and many kids might have experienced some of these musical styles or instruments in their families or if they have visited family in different parts of the world,” said BMS principal Kim Monette.
The Minnesota Percussion Trio has held over 1,500 performances since 1987 and has received many awards and recognitions in the Twin Cities’ art scene.
